Tooth sensitivity is a problem that affects approximately 30% people worldwide. In Poland alone, it affects as many as 32% inhabitants. The condition manifests itself in the excessive perception of heat, cold, sweet and sour taste and is associated with severe pain. It is therefore a problem that significantly reduces quality of life. What are the causes of tooth sensitivity and how can it be effectively counteracted?
Causes of tooth sensitivity
Healthy dentin is covered by a thick layer of enamel, root cementum and gums. However, with the passage of time, a situation can occur where the gums begin to recede and expose the necks of the teeth. As a result, the teeth become more vulnerable to all sorts of external influences.
It should be noted that exposed tooth necks are relatively often the result of neglect, including, among other things, periodontal disease, uncorrected malocclusion or an unsuitable diet. This is because citrus fruits, meat, sweets and fizzy drinks are conducive to the formation of hypersensitivity. It is also worth mentioning that the cause of this problem may also lie in improper tooth brushing or the use of improper toothpaste, which may lead to receding gums or damage to the enamel.
Treatment of tooth sensitivity
Treatment of hypersensitive teeth consists of the topical application of medications that are applied to a particularly sensitive area. These are mainly gels and varnishes containing anaesthetics and fluoride compounds. Tooth care also plays a key role in the treatment of hypersensitivity. The use of toothpastes with aminofluoride, which has a closing effect on the dentinal tubules, is recommended and significantly reduces the degree of dentinal hypersensitivity. On the other hand, the use of whitening toothpastes, which may contribute to excessive weakening of the enamel, should be avoided.
The way the teeth are brushed is also important. The best method is to brush them with a sweeping motion in the direction from the gum to the crown of the teeth. The choice of toothbrush is also important and should be very soft for those with hypersensitivity.
