Scaling and sandblasting – methods of removing dental calculus and plaque
To enjoy a beautiful and healthy smile, you should not only maintain proper oral hygiene, but also pay regular prophylaxis visits to your dentist. Dental calculus and plaque is a general problem concerning also persons who take a diligent care of their teeth. During a dental check-up, the dentist will assess the condition of the patient’s teeth and recommend systematic professional cleaning to remove calculus and plaque deposits.
It is recommended to have the teeth professionally cleaned once or twice a year.
Dental calculus
– what is it?
Dental calculus (tartar) is a hard build-up, dark in colour, formed as a result of mineralisation of the dental plaque.
If not removed, it may lead to inflammation in the oral cavity due to accumulation of bacteria on dental surfaces. Calculus build-ups cause serious dental and periodontal diseases. Plaque usually develops as a result of incorrect oral hygiene, tobacco smoking and drinking excessive amounts of tea and coffee.
Dental calculus and plaque are removed during the procedures of scaling and sandblasting. Scaling consists in removal of calculus with the use of dental scaling machines, whereas sandblasting allows to remove dental plaque, various types of deposits and stains with a jet unit.
Professional cleaning is the most effective if you combine the three procedures:
- scaling
- sandblasting
- fluoride treatment
Combination of all of the above services guarantees that calculus and plaque will be thoroughly removed and your teeth will be protected against dental caries and periodontal diseases. In ODENT Medical Center, we provide the professional tooth cleaning services in a package!
Scaling
Scaling is a painless treatment, consisting in removal of hardened deposit build-ups from the teeth. It is conducted with the use of an ultrasonic scaler. Ultrasounds and water destroy the deposited particles by disrupting it and removing from the tooth surface. Next, the teeth free of calculus are polished, which renders their surfaces smooth and prevents calculus formation.
After the scaling has been performed, the patient may feel temporary hypersensitivity of the teeth. Therefore, it is worthwhile to have a fluoride treatment after the scaling, to secure sensitive dental surfaces.
Sandblasting
Sandblasting is a safe and painless treatment. It is performed with a jet unit, i.e. a device which directs a jet of dental sand (cleaning powder) onto the teeth. The treatment removes plaque and stains from the dental surfaces. Sandblasting does not eliminate calculus, therefore ideally, it should be complemented by scaling.
The problem of dental plaque concerns mainly persons smoking tobacco, drinking vast quantities of strong tea and coffee or wearing an orthodontic appliance. After the treatment, the teeth gain lustre, seem whiter and shinier. The treatment is performed with the use of a jet unit which sprays into the patient’s mouth fine powder mixed with a specific amount of water. During the procedure, the powder is being sucked out from the patient’s mouth with the suction unit. The jet unit allows to reach all places in your mouth, also those with difficult access such as interdental gaps, thanks to which the treatment is very thorough. After the sandblasting a fluoride treatment it is recommended in order to strengthen the enamel.
Fluoride treatment – applying a coating of fluoride on the teeth
Fluoride treatment strengthens the enamel and makes it resistant to acids and bacteria causing tooth decay. It also counteracts periodontal diseases and hypersensitivity of the tooth necks.
The fluoride treatment consists in applying a coating of a fluoride-rich varnish onto the enamel with the use of specials little brushes. The varnish dries off on the teeth and leaves a layer similar to colourless nail varnish. The treatment is completely painless and takes about 15 minutes. After the procedure, you should not eat anything for ca. 2 hours to ensure enough time for fluoride absorption. The dentist will exceptionally recommend that you do not brush your teeth that evening, only rinse them with water.
