Implantology is a field of dentistry dealing with placement of dental implants to restore the natural function of a lost tooth and regain the aesthetics of the dentition. Modern implantology covers also the procedures of bone augmentation, e.g. maxillary sinus lift, with the use of bone-forming biomaterials

The procedure is performed to reconstruct deficient bone for the purposes of dental implant placement.

What is
a dental implant?

Currently, dental implants provide a state-of-the-art method to replace missing teeth.

This is the best solution for patients who, despite tooth loss, wish to enjoy a healthy smile without the risk that the teeth will appear unnatural. Dental implants are an alternative for traditional solutions, such as dentures and bridgework, which do not guarantee that degree of a natural look.

An implant is made of an extremely durable material – titanium. It is composed of a titanium “screw”, abutment (a part joining the “screw” with the prosthetic restoration) and a porcelain crown, replacing the missing tooth.

Titanium is a biocompatible material and does not provoke allergies nor inflammation. Titanium is a metal best tolerated by the human organism.

Diagnostics and planning of the treatment

Implant consultation – the doctor reviews your medical history, takes a panoramic radiograph or sends you to have a 3D tomography scan made. Based on the imaging, the doctor assesses the condition of your teeth and the amount of bone, as well as plans for the size of a potential implant. He or she presents the treatment plan and cost estimate to you.

Surgical stage

Implantation – the implant is placed in the bone of the maxilla or mandible where a tooth is missing. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, with the use of a computer-controlled system the Wand, and takes about an hour. The gum over the spot of implant placement is cut to uncover the bone. With the use of a specialist equipment, the bone is drilled to prepare for the implant. Once the implant has been inserted, the gum is sutured. Sutures are taken off ca. 10-14 days after the surgery. The procedure is completely painless.

The healing process after the implant placement usually takes 3 to 6 months, then the surgeon uncovers the upper part of the implant and fits a healing cap which shapes the gum of the future tooth neck. If bone augmentation is necessary, e.g. maxillary sinus lift, the process will take 6 to 9 months.

Prosthetic stage

A few days after the abutment has been fitted, a porcelain crown is produced for the implant. If a greater number of teeth is missing, a prosthetic restoration is produced, i.e. bridgework or dentures supported by several implants. During the entire process, the patient avails of a temporary prosthetic restoration, imitating the missing teeth.

Instructions to follow after implant placement:

  • Eat ice cream (no nuts or dry fruits) during the day following the

  • Do not drink alcohol for 48 hours.
  • Do not sleep on the side where an implant was placed for 7 days after the procedure.
  • Do not eat anything hot or warm for the entire day following the procedure.

After implantation, the doctor attaches a temporary restoration (crown) for a few months to replace a missing tooth.

A well-placed implant will last a lifetime, however we need to remember about maintaining good oral hygiene and check-ups with a dentist.

If you have missing teeth for over one year since the moment of loss or extraction, bone loss may often occur in the area of the maxillary sinus and the alveolar process. Once the decision about implant placement has been made, the bone deficiency will have to be made up for during the procedure of the maxillary sinus lift or local bone augmentation at the alveolar process. The procedure consists in placing biomaterial (bone substitute material) under the mucous membrane of the sinus floor to stimulate the formation of new bone. After the sinus lift, the implant may be placed during the same visit or a few months later.
