Dental caries
affects patients at any age
It is an infectious disease of hard dental tissues, namely enamel and dentin, caused by bacteria. Bacteria, which live in the dental plaque, feed on it and produce acids causing mineral breakdown of the enamel, i.e. caries.Tooth decay develops most often in the dental grooves, interdental spaces and around the gums.
At the first stage, chalky white spots may be noticed on the tooth. Then, the decay spot turns dark and rough. If untreated, the enamel breaks and a cavity forms.
Symptoms of caries
- visible dark spots on teeth - cavities/potholes
- discolouration of teeth
- bad breath
- sensitivity to cold/heat, sweet/sour when eating
- toothache when decay is already extensive and reaches the pulp
Treatment of dental caries:
Early treatment of dental caries involves the use of special fluoride products which built into the tooth. Fluoride aids remineralization, i.e. repair of the enamel, thanks to which the early white-spot lesions are reversible. However, if a cavity has already formed in the enamel and dentin, a dentist has to intervene, remove the tissues affected by caries and place a composite filling. If we deal with deep caries lesions, the patient may feel strong toothache as the bacteria have already infected the pulp and root canals. In such an event, the root canal therapy is required.
To make the dental treatment painless, we use a computer-controlled topical anaesthesia – The Wand.
At ODENT Centre, we offer composite fillings of well-known and reliable producers. The composite materials come in a variety of shades, which allows for perfect match with the natural colour of the tooth. In the case of bigger cavities, we offer porcelain onlay/inlay fillings..
How to look after your teeth and prevent tooth decay:
- a healthy diet, limiting sugar/carbohydrate intake
- correct daily oral hygiene: brushing 3 times a day for a minimum of 3 minutes, flossing and rinsing with dental floss
- use fluoride toothpaste
do not forget to clean your tongue as it too harbours bacteria - when it is not possible to brush the teeth, rinsing with water after meals
- six-monthly dental check-ups
- professional dental hygiene performed in the office: scaling, sandblasting, fluoridation - once every six months
Healthy and beautiful teeth can be the result of the simple but systematic work of proper oral hygiene!

At the ODENT Centre,
we offer Porcelain inlays and onlays
Inlay, onlay
Porcelain fillings which ideally restore the anatomical shape of the tooth. Inlays and onlays provide a great aesthetic effect and are much more durable than traditional fillings. The doctor will remove the decay from inside of the tooth and take an impression of the cavity, which will be used in the prosthetics lab for microscope-assisted production of a porcelain onlay/inlay filling. For the time of manufacturing an onlay/inlay filling in the lab, the doctor will close your tooth with a temporary filling, then, at the second visit, he or she will remove it and attach the porcelain filling.
Portcelain veneer
A thin dental prosthetic restoration, a porcelain shell, fitted to the anterior surface of the tooth (it looks like a nail plate). A porcelain veneer is 0.5mm – 0.7mm thick. Veneers are made for aesthetic reasons, e.g. to lengthen, shorten or widen the crown or to provide a natural look in the event of discoloured or dead teeth.
